EPHEMERA

ephemera is a
production company that seeks to tell human stories through documentary film. I was tasked with redesigning its brand from scratch with a focus on minimalism and its ephemeral nature.

The Brand

While ephemera did have an existing logo and a basic brand identity, I was tasked with starting the redesign with a brand new logo to replace the old one.

I wanted to incoporate a mix of straight lines and rounded edges in the main logo that I could intersperse throughout the rest of the branding.

The iconographic logo is meant to resemble a blur of lines that ultimately focuses itself onto one singular crosshair.

See below for the brand identity.

The First Landing
Page Iterations

Once the logos, fonts, and general style and colors were visualized, my next task (and the main meat of the branding project) was to design the layouts for the ephemera website and then translate them into Cargo.

I experimented with breaking apart the pieces of the ephemera emblem, using the rounded and straight linework to assist in creating a set of potential layouts for the website’s landing page.

See below for the the first drafts.

The Animations

Coinciding with designing the website was creating the animations for the ephemera logo, and for the landing page.

I experimented some more here with different color palettes and effects in After Effects to figure out the best approach to the visuals of the animations.

See below for the animation iterations.

The Website

The winning color palette was a muted purple and hazy orange combination, with slightly limited effects to allow for a less cluttered look when applied to the website.

Once I’d completed everything thus far, my next step was to drop the finalized landing page animation into Cargo to turn it into an actual landing page with a clickable menu.

You can view the
finished website here.

See below for the final landing pages.

The Business
Cards + Stickers

With the website finalized, the next step was to create print-ready business cards, stickers, and then the asset tags.

I built off of the existing brand identity I’d been desiging throughout the course of this project and used of my landing page layout to create the business cards.

See below for the cards and stickers.

The Pitch Decks

Finally, I was tasked with creating slide templates to be used for pitch decks that matched ephemera’s brand.

I used the landing page layout as another starting point for the pitch decks, and continued experimenting with the mixed linework that I’d interspersed throughout the rest of the brand.

I created template layouts in Adobe Illustrator, which I then translated into Google Sheets as a theme that could be mixed and matched with different options for each type of slide.

See below for the pitch deck slides.

Final Thoughts

My client and I were
super happy with how ephemera’s branding turned out! Translating my work from Adobe Illustrator and After Effects into Cargo was a rewarding task, and I especially had fun bringing the glowing, hazy visuals to life in the website.

ephemera was a great way to branch out of my usual style and create something more minimalist, while still allowing plenty of room for on-brand personality and uniqueness.
